Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. — Matthew 5:14
No one loves Christmas more than my neighbourhood. My parents made it magical every year with the little they had to provide for us, and a huge part of that experience was the toys we received on Christmas Eve night. We couldn’t afford a Christmas tree, but we had all the food and homemade drinks for the season coupled with all the love of the family.
My father was always home for the holidays and spent time with neighbours and passersby. I have many memories of going outside, with the kids to show off our toys and visit the nearby homes. We look forward to that moment every year. As I grew older and understand the meaning of the season I focus mainly on the light that has turned on in the world. I want to have that connection every day, all year to let the world know that Jesus is still Lord on this great Universe.
When Jesus teaches that we, as His followers, are to be the light of the world, I picture surrounding houses and streets all lit up on Christmas Eve. Church bells ring and the carols are sung out to remind the villagers that it is Christmas time. The light of our faith is not for our benefit only. There are too many people living in darkness for us to selfishly hide our light. In fact, Jesus says that a city built on a hill cannot be hidden. The implication is that, if we are filled with the light of Jesus, we are unable to keep it hidden. We can’t help but illuminate the paths of those around us.
The light of our faith should be as evident from the road as it is from our living room. Whatever light reflected on the eve of Christmas should also include the light of your faith. Let your light so shine forth that men will see Christ in you the hope of glory. In everything we do or celebrate it must have a reflection of the Christ, the Son of God shining forth to all generation.
Let Us Pray
Lord, it was never Your intention that I hid Your light for myself. Help me to step out of my comfort zone and seek to brighten some of the darkness around me. May we continue to illuminate the lives that surround us and the entire village or neighbourhood. As a matter wherever we may go. Amen
Have you decorated your Christmas tree yet? We are to be the light of the world. Let’s shine Jesus every day of the year! I will love to hear from you and tell us what are your plans for the holiday and keeping your lights on and shining.
