By: His Lordship the Honourable Bishop Andres Quow OM
This is the day that the Lord has made, we will rejoice and be glad in it. Thanking God for a New Day, a New Month and a New Year that brings New Beginning. In everything, there’s always a beginning or a starting point. 2019 has left us and we are now in a brand new year, the year 2020. I pray that God will open up our spiritual eyes and give us a 20/20 vision. St John 1:1-5 tells us ‘’In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.2 The same was in the beginning with God.3 All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made.4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.’’.
Genesis 1 reminds us that In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth.2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
So the word Beginning is very important. In the beginning was the word. In the beginning God created heaven and the earth. For us to build a house, there must be a beginning, there must be a foundation. January 1st marks the beginning of a new year. Christ Himself is The Beginning of our Faith. In the beginning was the Word. John is telling us in the passage that Jesus (The Word) was present at the beginning of creation. In Hebrew, though, The
Word was another expression for God. So John’s description shows clearly that he is speaking of Jesus, (see especially John 1:14 ). Jesus was the ultimate revelation of God, the living picture of God’s holiness, the one by whom all things consist.
Beloved! When God created, he made something from nothing. So because we are created beings, we have no basis for pride. Remember that we exist only because God made us, and we have special gifts only because God gave them to us. With God we are something valuable and unique. Apart from God we are nothing, and if we try to live without Him we will be abandoning the purpose for which we were made.
Beloved, Do you ever feel that your life is too complex for God to understand? Remember, God created the entire universe, and nothing is too difficult for Him. God created you, He created me. He is alive today, and His love is bigger than any problem we can face.
Beloved, Christ who is the Light will always overcome darkness. Darkness must always give way once there is light. Darkness of evil never has and never will overcome God’s light. Jesus Christ is the Creator of life and his life brings light to humankind. In His light, we see ourselves as we really are (sinners in need of a Saviour). When we follow Jesus, the true Light, we can avoid walking blindly and falling into sin. Although Jesus brought the light, there is still much spiritual darkness because most people prefer darkness. Jesus is the light of this world, He is our God-given source of spiritual enlightenment. But we must believe in that light. John 12:36 says ‘’ While ye have light, believe in the light, that he may be the children of light’’. Many people stumble along in spiritual darkness because they do not believe in the light. He lights the path ahead of us so we can see how to live. He removes the darkness of sin from our lives. I encourage us to let Christ guide our lives, and we’ll never need to stumble in darkness. After finding the light, we must also believe in the light, walk in the light and expose the works of darkness.
By the grace of God, we can walk in the light. If you believe that Jesus is the Christ, the son of the living God if you are willing to turn your backs on the works of darkness and come to the Light of God if you desire to put on the armour of light, to put Christ on in baptism, let us know and we will help you.
May the Grace of God be with you throughout 2020 and beyond.
