GUARDING THE HEART

“But take heed to Yourselves, lest Your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day comes on you unexpectedly.” Luke 21:34

King Solomon wisely said, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it” (Proverbs 4:23). A thousand years later, Jesus put some meat on the bones of Solomon’s warning, telling you that your focus on the cares of this world, if You’re not careful, can weigh down your heart.

God knows your heart, and He knows that you’re prone to doing things, thinking things, and looking at things that can weigh down Your heart and keep you from pure fellowship with Him. That’s why He’s so committed to transforming your thinking so that it focuses on Him first-ahead of your own fleshly desires and even ahead of the legitimate cares of this your own fleshly desires and even ahead of the legitimate cares of this world You must deal with daily.

What kinds of things take your focus off God? If it’s a particular sin, take the time to confess it and turn away from it. If it’s your worldly responsibilities, put them in His able hands so they don’t distract you from what’s most important.

Gracious Father, many things in this world have the potential to weigh down my heart and cause me to stray from You. You’ve saved and transformed me, so help me show my gratitude by fervently guarding the new heart You’ve placed within me. guarding the new heart You’ve placed within me.
