DEEP-HEARTED DECENCY

Never let loyalty and kindness leave you! Tie them around your neck as a reminder. Write them deep within your heart. PROVERBS 3:3 NLT Following ancient biblical tradition, observant Jewish men wear small boxes filled with Bible verses, called tefillin, strapped o their forehead and hand as they pray. The idea is that they keep God’s Word on their minds and obey it in their deeds (Deuteronomy 11:18).

Of course, without internalizing such concepts, you run the risk of a superficial brand of service to Christ-the appearance of kindness without any deep concern for someone’s spiritual health. But before You can truly invest in someone else’s welfare, you have to spend time writing God’s love deep within your own heart. Jesus said, “The mouth speaks what the heart is full of” (Luke 6:45 NIV). If God’s words are in your heart, they will come out in your speech-discerning, life-giving, useful words “fitly spoken…like apples of gold in settings of silver” (Proverbs 25:11).

Use sticky notes to post favourite verses around the house, where they can easily be seen. God wants to write His Word on your heart, and He will if You let Him. If You begin with loyalty and kindness, you’ll be off to a good start, able to get along with both men and God.
